"A part of the problem is that IR theory faces the fact that the scholars representing selected IR approaches are too profoundly influenced by certain paradigms, specific familiar literature, and leading authors to notice that there are other alternative opinions or descriptions of the reality at hand. They dismiss by default other competing interpretations of reality. (Un)fortunately too many IR scholars tend to embark on a different journey that leads them to the arms of only one school of thought that traps them for years if not decades in just one or maybe two sets of explanatory models, a far-reaching methodological comfort, theoretical predictability, and some pre-given rules and regulations of what is allowed and what is not allowed in their research. In this sense, any encounter with IR theory that makes a serious attempt to constrain all its schools, paradigms, theories, and traditions within one scientific ontology can be compared to Homer’s Odyssey, for during this epic journey home, its main protagonist, the young King of Ithaca, ends up heavily penalized by Poseidon and other ancient gods for his arrogant Trojan War victory, and the retribution is very dire, for Odysseus is challenged with a number of tasks and trap that keeps sending him away further and further from his beloved Ithaca each time he tries to catch up, or each time he thinks that he finally has made headway. Some parts of his journey are especially treacherous, like when he ends up as a prisoner of Calypso on Ogigua Island for several years until he finally manages to free himself. This young king faces many other retributory strikes, winds that send him far away to some unknown destinations, sea monsters, the treachery of his comrades, and each time his challenge ends up more and more unpredictable, timeconsuming, and tiring."
